a weekend in the forestA couple of weekends ago I decided to head out to the wilds of a forest and spend the weekend in a cabin in the woods with the husband and our pooch, Ollie. Now that we are dog owners we wanted something dog friendly and what better kind of holiday for Ollie than being surrounded by nature and a weekend full of long walks?! The idea behind the weekend was to completely switch off, recharge and just generally spend some quality time together. We booked our cabin via Forest Holidays and we chose to stay at the site in Cropton, near Pickering in North Yorkshire. Forest holidays offer cabins for all kinds of party sizes and some are pet friendly too which of course was perfect for us. We arrived on Friday evening as check-in was at 4pm and left 10am Monday morning. It was a weekend surrounded by nature, peace and quiet. Before we left for our little getaway we decided that we were going to have as much chill time as possible. When we arrived on Friday evening we spent most of it settling Ollie in as he isn't the biggest fan of new places and can take some time to eventually settle down (so much so he woke us up pretty much every hour on the first night!). Saturday arrived and although we were pretty tired from the disrupted sleep we decided that we needed to wear Ollie out so he would be super tired and settle down better. We headed out for a 3 mile morning walk in the woods around us, then decided to head to Dalby Forest for another walk. Again, that was around 3 miles so we managed to get in just over 6 miles before lunchtime! The best bit was the weather; it was such a beautiful day! From there we decided to have a cuppa and then head back to the cabin for a short rest before heading out on a slightly shorter 1 mile walk through the woods to finish off Ollie's walks for the day. And yes, it worked and he was shattered! Sunday was all about the chills and we did another 3 mile walk in the morning which was then followed by a day of relaxing, napping and eating. Not much more to tell you here I'm afraid! We really enjoyed our holiday and particularly loved the peace that we got from where our cabin was situated (you can pick your own when you book). It was nice to be left to it for the weekend and not be disturbed by anyone checking in on us or coming in to clean; it's all left to you which I much prefer. The only downside I would say to the weekend was the food that we bough from from the cafe/bar area. On the Saturday morning we ordered a large breakfast each, to be delivered to our cabin at a certain time. It arrived on time but when we actually went in to the packages we realised there were some items missing (hash browns- that's the only reason why I ordered it). The quality of the breakfast wasn't great either- the sausages didn't taste great and the bacon was super salty; not ideal. Toast also came but they obviously presumed we would have butter as no butter came with it. On Sunday we decided to go to the cafe/bar and grab a bite to eat for lunch. Again, not great unfortunately. I had a ham and cheese toastie with sweet potato fries and Karl had a fish finger sandwich with the same fries. Karl's lunch came out cold, my fries were cold and actually, I'm unsure of they were actually cooked properly?! Anyway, my toastie was nice and hot but came with about 3 blocks of cheese on it! So, to conclude: I would definitely recommend the cabins and holiday type for definite! Everything was very easy to book and sort out, the cabin was lovely and clean, fresh and modern and the whole setting was very pretty. All I would say is, either take your own food (they are self-catering after all) or head a little further afield to grab some food! Amie xx Note: This is not a paid or gifted post. I paid for the trip and everything involved in the stay. All opinions are my own and don't reflect the opinions of anyone else :) |
