Blogger Spotlight: dr. Jenna Macciochi

The final Blogger Spotlight of the year is here. It feels a little weird saying that and I almost don't want to say it?! It has been an absolute pleasure having so many wonderful bloggers featured on my website and although it feels like the end of an epic time with all of these ladies, I'm ready to step it up and move on to something bigger and better for 2019.
Don't worry though, we are ending the year on a high with the wonderful Dr. Jenna Macciochi. Jenna is an Immunologist and specialises in the close relationship between the nutrition, lifestyle & the immune system in health & disease. Jenna is a fountain of knowledge and reading her blog has been super interesting! I learnt so much from her.

Tell me a little about yourself and your blog...
I am a scientist, specifically an immunologist studying the immune system, specifically how nutrition and lifestyle affect our health and microbiome.  My blog evolved from my instagram which I started as a sandbox to discuss the immune system in health and disease with anyone who was interested.  Turned out quite a lot of people have quite a lot of questions about the immune system so the blog gave me a platform to go into more depth on topics.  I also then decided I wanted to write a book about how to be well and take care of your immune system, part recipes/rituals and part handbook, so my blog helped me organise information and ideas that I want to include in the book.
Finally I am also a mum (to boy/girl twins) so I also like to talk about parenting and kids.

How long have you been blogging and what kind of content can we find on your blog?
I only started blogging this year but I have been an immunologist for over 15 years so I have a lot of experience.

What made you choose to start a blog and why did you choose the subject/s you blog about?
I blog about my area of expertise the immune system, diet, microbiome, health and wellbeing.  I like to evaluate the science behind 'old wives tales' and alternative health products and strategies.  I
believe in taking care of the body to take care of the mind.  I am a doctor of immunology and passionate about translating the very best cutting edge science into usable lifestyle tips, tricks and recipes.  A blog is a great platform for me to express my ideas and experiences around this subject.

Where do you find inspiration from for your blog?
I normally draw on my professional experience, new scientific and medical literature or from asking my audience question on instagram.

Do you have any big plans for your blog?
I want the blog to evolve into my book and a platform that will act as a resource for people interested in science and lifestyle medicine. I would also like to collaborate with other professionals.

Tell me about your proudest blog achievement.
Well it is such early stages but getting to write guest posts for other huge bloggers has been pretty fun.

What has been your biggest blog disaster?
Equally its too early in the process really, probably just not starting it earlier!

Time is always a big discussion point between bloggers, how do you manage your time?
Well I'd say routine and planning are actually quite freeing.  I am a mother to 3 yr old twins and have a full time job so I need to be meticulous.  Sometimes things just have to wait because family time will always be a priority.  As I get older, I am more confident in setting boundaries around my time and only saying yes to projects I believe in or feel passionate about instead of every opportunity that comes my way.

Lastly, where do you see your blog in 5 years time?
I'd like to have a book deal under my belt and continue to evolve the blog into a resource to compliment that.  A place where people can reliably go to get information based on the latest cutting edge science.  I'd love to work with corporate companies who want to use immune system benefits in their marketing and help them evaluate the literature.  I would also like to continue to do events and public outreach work.

A massive thank you to Jenna for answering these questions! Working full-time, being a mum and still managing to fit time in to blog is incredible! I love Jenna's approach to her blog and that she dreams of writing a book! I love her evidence-based posts that really dig deep into certain subjects; Jenna certainly loves what she does and it shows in her great articles and blogs!
