five places you must visit in paris |
|
The city of Love is well known for it's beautiful architecture romantic style and of course, many incredible and beautiful sights. I have visited Paris three times in my life- one was with secondary school and we went to Disneyland so I can't really say I saw Paris itself that much on that trip- and each time I loved the beautiful city.
There are of course lots of places to visit in Paris, some well known like the Eiffel Tower, The Louvre and Notre Dame, but others that aren't as well known and are less touristy (my kind of places!).
Here are my top five Paris sights and places that you must visit.

Here are my top five Paris sights and places that you must visit.
Montparnasse Tower
Montparnasse Tower is a 59 storey skyscraper in the 14th Arrondissement. I know, I didn't realise Paris had skyscrapers either until I was looking up new places to visit whilst in Paris. The tower itself is nothing great to look at- it's just a big skyscraper at the end of the day- but the views from the top of the building are something else. You can see a full 360 degree view of Paris from above and there is an incredible view of the Eiffel Tower! If you think the Eiffel Tower looks amazing from the ground then you haven't been up Montparnasse Tower! The tower offers an inside and enclosed viewing area or you can make your way up to the roof and take in some fresh air and see the views from a viewing platform there (this is where you get the best view of the Eiffel Tower).
We went at around 3.30pm and we went straight up to the top, no queues and not busy at all.

Tour Saint-jacques
The tower of Saint-Jacques is a lonely bell tower situated in the centre of a tiny little park near the river in the 4th Arrondissement. We hadn't planned to visit here but we happened to just stumble upon it whilst walking to Les Marais. The tower has guided tours only which run every hour on the hour. Be warned- the ladies only do the tour in French so if you don't know any French you won't learn the history of the tower. Luckily for us we managed to pick out the odd bit of information and anything we didn't get was explained to us by the lovely tour guide after she had spoken to group. The tower has 300 steps to the top and of course it's a small spiral staircase like all of these old towers.
The views from the top are pretty spectacular considering it isn't all that high up. You get a fab 360 view of the city and if you ask the guides they can tell you what some of the buildings are across the city.

Eiffel tower
I'm not a huge fan of hugely touristy places but I can make exceptions for a small number of places, the Eiffel Tower being one. If you haven't been here before then it's certainly a must. The sheer size of the tower when stood under it is incredible and the views from the top are not to be missed. Be warned though- this place gets seriously busy! I would suggest getting there early or leaving it until late evening to go as those are the quieter times. If you fancy a bit of a challenge why not walk up the first two stories? The queues for tickets for the stairs are a lot shorter than the lift queues and yes it's a challenge but it's not as hard as you think it is to walk up to the second floor of the Eiffel Tower- you get a break on the first level anyway :).
Promenade Plantee
Have any of you visited or heard of the High Line in NYC? An old railway viaduct that has been transformed into a green walkway through the city? Well the Promenade Plantee is the Paris version of this. This green space is a truly beautiful part of Paris. It's just under 3 miles long and is a perfect way to view the architecture and enjoy some greenery in the middle of a city. The great thing about this is that there were not many tourist there at all- just lots of people enjoying reading books and plenty of runners too.
Louvre Museum
This museum is on another level of museums, it's so huge! So much so that we actually got lost and ended up back at the same staircase each time we tried to leave the building! If you are after some serious art and some beautiful architecture then the Louvre is somewhere you must visit. In fact, even if you aren't into those things then you still need to visit, it's pretty incredible.
Located in the 1st Arrondissement right next to the river it's not only a great place to see art- Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo being the big attractions- it has great places to grab some food or simply just sit and admire the building.
Again, be warned- this place can get very busy, especially around the famous art and statues! My advice would be to go first thing and maybe try and spend a good few hours there. It's so vast that even though we've been there are still parts we didn't see properly.
