#girlpow 'inspire, empower, educate' event |
|
This weekend I travelled all the way down to London to attend an event hosted by the amazing Anna Sward from Protein Pow and Zanna, Tally and Victoria founders of the #girlgains movement. The event was hosted at the Third Space Sports Club in Canary Wharf (fricking amazing place!!).
The whole event was aimed to 'Inspire, Empower and Educate' women to just basically chill out a little bit and love themselves.
The #girlgains girls and Anna spoke about themselves and how they became interested in the health and fitness world and how they have never looked back since.
One of the main topics of the day that has really stuck with me was around social media and the impact this has on women all over the world. There is a huge difference in what you see online and to what the reality is and this is why you should take everything you see on social media and advertising with a pinch of salt. That girl with the perfect bum? Yeah, its called filters, contrast changes and the right camera angle. The girl with six pack abs? She really doesn't look like that all the time, trust me. I am guilty of it myself. I look at girls and think 'Why don't I look like her?' I'll tell you why, because I am not her. I am me and there is no way I would ever be like her no matter how hard I trained or how many times I change my diet. Everyone is different and everyone has different food and dietary needs. As Zanna put it...she is 6ft and eats like an elephant (lol). Her body composition is completely different to someone who is let's say 5ft tall, so why would they need to eat the same amount of calories?! They wouldn't. Zannas goals will also be different so that completely changes what your body needs and requires to reach those goals. Your calorie and macronutrient intake along with your goals are completely tailored to you.
The event also saw guest speakers from Jacqueline Hurst, a Life Coach and Nicola Hobbs, a Yoga Teacher and Author of Yoga Gym. Both women spoke about themselves and shared the importance of loving yourself and being positive. Both women went through really rough patches in their lives and yet they were there to tell the tale of really how important and powerful it is to think positive and love yourself.
At the end of all the inspirational talks it was time to start the messy part of the day...protein bar making with Anna!
Can I just point out now that I have never seen so much nut butter in one room in my ENTIRE LIFE!! There was literally enough to last anyone a lifetime.
This was definitely becoming exciting and I couldn't wait to get stuck in!
The aim of the game? Make protein bars or truffles using any and all of the ingredients provided. We had the Protein Pow cooking mixes, honey, agave, linwoods goodies, nut butters galore and plenty of other dried fruits and nuts to add. Once Anna had explained the general process of making protein bars we got stuck in. I paired up with a lovely girl from East London and we went nut butter crazy! I literally must have eaten my bodyweight in all the nut butter flavours you can imagine...never mind!!
We used all the ingredients we could and made so many different flavoured protein balls! It was crazy, messy and ridiculously fun!

So, pulling it back to the aim of the event it really has made me realise how much I really shouldn't be worrying about how I look so much and focus on being fit, happy and healthy. The whole event really has spurred me on to think twice about comparing myself to others and not loving how far I have already come in my fitness and health journey. I had almost forgotten the journey I've come on to be where I am today as I was focusing too much on what the next thing is that I can do. Don't get me wrong, setting and having goals is very important and I will continue to do so but I will remember to celebrate the journey I have come on to reach my goals more often. I woke up this morning (the day after) thinking about how I am definitely going to be more positive and love myself more and it's now almost 6pm and I have had such a brilliant day! And, I feel bloody amazing for it!
So my message to you all reading this is this; Stop comparing yourselves to others and enjoy the journey YOU are on. Love life, be positive and love yourself. Don't worry about what anybody else thinks or says. If people can't love you for who you are, a confident and happy woman who really knows and loves themselves, then maybe they aren't the right people for you.
Spread the Love! <3
