hEALTHY York city guide
Guest blog by enlivening Elle

I consider it a point of pride to keep my finger on the pulse of new developments that occur in the Northern cities that surround me, but most especially with York, my home city. Yorkshire has seen some big developments, with new studios, eateries and shopping districts popping up at a record speed. To help you hone in on where to go, here’s my guide on the best places to sweat and refuel in York -the perfect way to start an active weekend in the city.

sweat

For David Lloyd members, the new Blaze workout is a must-try. This circuit style class will feel familiar to F45 attendees and is sure to have you challenging your cardiovascular system and strength. What is most exciting though, is that the new Blaze studio in York is set to be the biggest in the country!

Ever wanted to try reformer pilates? Then MI Pilates is the studio for you. Conveniently located just round the corner from the station, MI Pilates runs early morning and lunchtime reformer classes as well as their regular mat pilates classes. Class numbers are limited so you’ll be able to get plenty of attention from one of the lovely instructors making sure that you’re working hard and safely.

If you prefer to feel the heat in your movement, head to Yogabomb, York’s only hot yoga studio. With a newly opened juice and coffee bar, you can sweat, shop and drink in one space. There’s an emphasis on vinyasa yoga (including the Saturday 8:15am power yoga lead by yours truly!), but you can also find Ashtanga, Yin, Bikram-style and a whole range of workshops in the timetable. Plus, if you stay at the Headley Hotel upstairs, you’ll get a special resident’s rate.

Psst -here’s an early heads to a new gym opening soon in York: Supersonic Fitness. It promises to “advance the concepts of fitness and wellbeing, lifestyle and social interaction”. It will have a gym space, studio classes, living plant wall, recovery zone and cafe. You heard it here first!

eat

For a wide selection of loose leaf teas and coffee; tasty brunch (I recommend the avocado and feta toast) and cakes, make a stop at Brew and Brownie. The interior is gorgeous; lots of pale wood, with succulents on the table and mint-filled water glasses. In short, perfect for getting that instagram shot -latte art at the ready!

True Story, York’s vegan cafe is easily found thanks to the famous yellow “Bile Beans” advert painted onto the side of the building. They’re already making a name for themselves with their plant based cakes, and also have a great selection of smoothies and juices.

Fancy a grown up brunch? Partisan is your place to go. They’re also open Thursday through Saturday in the evenings, which I’d highly recommend -how does sprout kimchi with mushroom oyster dumplings or gnocchi with walnut butter and cranberry pesto sound? They also make the best vegan doughnuts in town, so make a detour down Micklegate and drop in.

It is impossible to mention healthy eating in York without mentioning Filmore and Union. I love their brunches, and most months the restaurant hosts a themed night with some brilliant dishes -the California menu was my favourite this year. For New Year’s Eve, there’s a special evening menu to celebrate the end of the year. There are always options to cater for all dietary requirements. You’ll often catch me there sipping on a turmeric or matcha latte, or treating myself to their hummus eggs on toast.

An honourable mention also goes to the Shambles Market, which now hosts an array of outdoor food trucks and cabins, catering to all diets and with a variety of cuisines on offer, all with covered seating. Similarly, Spark has had a hugely successful first year as a drinks and entertainment space, so start your evening there if you’re after a tipple and light bites to eat.
