the benefits of boxing

When I started my blog back in 2016, I was very much focussed on fitness as a subject and only really ever wrote about fitness and fitness-related things. A lot has changed since then but looking back at some of the blog posts I wrote back then, although I wasn't offering advice as such, I was discussing fitness and the benefits of some types of workout styles.
Now that I am a qualifies personal trainer I wanted to re-visit some of these blog posts and kind of revive them with some more qualified advice as well as of course the fun stuff. In this post I discussed boxing and the benefits this has.

Back then I wrote-
"Boxing is something that has recently become a lot more popular within the fitness industry and is being used a lot more in peoples workout regimes. Many people I follow on Instagram have taken to boxing and are raving about how much they enjoy it and how they plan to continue using it within their own workout routines. I have taken part in boxing classes and I can safely say I totally understand why people are loving it...4 years since I started and I can definitely say it is one of, if not my favourite form of training"

Back then I loved boxing and although I still do, I don't practice this weekly like I used to. However I do now teach boxing as part of a class I teach twice a week called Box & Bells; this combines boxing with weighted exercises usually using kettlebells or dumbbells.

So from a more mature and a more qualified point of view, what are the benefits of boxing?!

Fun!

Above anything else boxing is a lot of fun. Boxing is a pretty tiring style of workout and you DEFINITELY feel it in your arms but it sometimes doesn't actually feel like a workout whilst you're taking part...you partner up, have a laugh and giggle and work on some badass combinations and moves. It is quite addictive and no matter what level you are at you want to become better.

Great Workout

Boxing is one of the toughest workouts there is, if you do it properly. Every part of your body is used when boxing and it is great cardio, plain and simple. If you are looking to incorporate cardio into your weekly workout routine then boxing is a great way to do this.

Strength and power

Boxing involves repetitive, quick motions and as a result your arms and legs get  stronger. When boxing correctly you also use your hips, glutes, core, obliques, back, shoulders and chest; pretty much every muscle group in your body! Punching against resistance causes all of these muscles to contract and work, developing your strength and power.

Stress Relief

This is probably one of my favourite benefits. We all get stressed from time to time so what better way to relieve that stress than by punching it out on the punch bags or with a wicked partner! Sparring with your partner or just getting your aggression out on a punch bag can make you feel 100 times better. Physical activity in general helps relieve stress whilst the focus on your movements when boxing helps you clear your mind.

Improved Coordination

Boxing isn't just about hitting something, you have to know how and where to hit for maximum effectiveness. You might think that hand-eye coordination doesn't have an effect on overall health but it certainly does! While boxing you needs to see the target, react and hit the target all whilst it's moving in different directions and changing position. Improving hand-eye coordination improves your overall physical coordination and gross and fine motor skills.

Self Defence

Even though this isn't the aim of general boxing/boxercise style classes it's like a little added bonus. You become stronger, faster and more confident. As a result you are more likely to be confident enough to fight back if ever faced with an opponent. Confidence does wonders for your overall self-esteem!
