The Importance of Stretching
After you’ve finished working out or training, what do you do? If you are like most of us then you tend to relax and walk it off- maybe stretch for a few seconds. Do you then just have your post-workout snack or shake and jump in the shower? I thought so.
I’m here to tell you about why it is so important to cool-down and stretch off properly after any workout.
During a workout your muscles get worked hard and go through many contractions which leave them in a shortened state. This is why you feel soreness and tightness if you don’t rectify this by stretching. Your muscles also produce lactic acid which makes them tired and sore. The lactic acid builds up in your muscles- by stretching them off you eliminate the lactic acid.
Blood flow is also another important reason to stretch. Stretching helps the blood flow back into your muscles, allowing your heart rate to come back to normal. Your muscles feed on oxygen which is brought to them via blood.
Tension, anxiety and general aches and pains can also be caused by not stretching. The most common complaint for people is lower back pain. Usually stretching the hamstrings and hip flexors appropriately will relieve the pain. When you are tense or anxious it can have an effect on your muscles too. Releasing and stretching muscles in the areas you feel tension often leads to an overall feeling of stress relief.
